5:30am Sadhana as the sun rose and the birds started to sing, chanting until I saw colours and chakras spinning, kriyas that pushed my mind and body to their limits, learnings from Shiv Charan Singh about numerology, what happens when we die and much more that lead to a deeper understanding of myself and others which will only strengthen all my practices, nightly kirtan with incredible musicians, seva in the kitchen after dinner and of course got to play a harmonium which I am in love with. You can go and do seva over the summer they are looking for volunteers and I’d highly recommend it.

We often try to intellectualise new wellness practices, especially those like Spinal Energetics. Our minds seek scientific explanations and logical frameworks to understand how things work. However, this urge to over think can become a barrier when the practice itself relies on a different kind of understanding – one that goes beyond the rational. ⭐️

🧘🏼‍♀️ Mindful Movement: Gentle, rhythmic activities like walking in nature, yoga, or Tai Chi can help ground you in your body and shift out of a threat response. The focus is on sensation rather than achievement.

🌳 Grounding Techniques: Engage your senses to reconnect with the present moment. Notice the feeling of your feet on the ground, the scent of your surroundings, or the textures around you. This anchors you in the “now,” reducing the perception of imminent threat.

🎶 Vagal Nerve Stimulation: The vagus nerve plays a key role in regulating the nervous system. Gentle humming, singing, or even gargling can stimulate this nerve and promote a sense of calm.

❤️ Safe and Supportive Connection: Spending time with people you trust and feel safe with can send powerful signals of safety to your nervous system. Social connection is a fundamental regulator.

⭐️ Body-Based Practices: Somatic experiencing or Trauma-Sensitive Yoga, guided by trained professionals, can help release stored tension and gently process past experiences that may be contributing to hypervigilance.

Polyvagal theory, developed by Stephen Porges, explains how the autonomic nervous system, particularly the vagus nerve, influences our experience of safety, social connection, and reactions to stress. There are 3 primary circuits that dictate our physiological and behavioural responses:

✨ Ventral Vagal Complex (Social Engagement System): This is the newest system, unique to mammals, and promotes feelings of safety and connection. When this system is dominant, we feel calm, engaged, and able to connect with others. It’s associated with facial expressions, vocalisations, and listening.
✨ Sympathetic Nervous System (Fight-or-Flight): This system is activated when we perceive a threat. It prepares us to either confront the danger (fight) or escape it (flight) by increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and alertness.
✨ Dorsal Vagal Complex (Immobilisation): This is the oldest system, associated with survival when fight or flight aren’t possible. It leads to a “shutdown” response, characterised by a drop in heart rate and blood pressure, and feelings of numbness or dissociation.

The theory emphasises neuroception, our body’s unconscious assessment of safety or danger, which triggers these responses. It also highlights the importance of co-regulation, how we influence each other’s nervous system states through social interaction. Understanding these states can help us recognise our responses to stress and find ways to return to a state of safety and social engagement, promoting emotional regulation and resilience.
